The Lincoln Highway successfully convinced Americans that interstate highways were important. So important, in fact, that the country needed more. But with more named highways came more confusion. In 1927 the government numbered and, in some cases, broke up the named highways.

The highways have been renamed, renumbered, and moved several times since Joy’s day. This map shows the approximate route of the Lincoln Highway on today’s major roads.
