Scheckler Schoolhouse Circa 1968

The first Sheckler Schoolhouse was used previously by the government while building the Lahontan Dam. It was moved in 1907 from its original location by the powerhouse at Lake Lahontan to land donated to the school district by Dan Sheckler. This building burned down in December of 1913 due to a faulty stovepipe. In 1914 land was donated to the Sheckler School District under the Community Centers Act where the Secretary of the Interior could provide up to five acres on reclamation project land for public spaces. A new school was built on the west side of St. Clair Rd. approximately one-half mile south of the intersection of Sheckler Rd. in 1915 and used until 1919 when the Sheckler School District joined Consolidated B. In the 1960's the building was torn down for salvagable parts. The land was returned to the government in October of 1982.

SCHOOL HOUSE BURNED
In Shedder District Friday Morning Breaking High Tension
Line—Soon Repaired.
The school house in Sheckler District caught fire yesterday morning shortly before school time and was totally destroyed, but all the furniture and books were saved. A defective pipe was the cause. There was no insurance. Three rooms were immediately offered for school purposes and arrangements were made to accept the offer of the teacher, Miss Zay Barber, of a large room in her father's home which is unoccupied. School will open Monday. The district had previously secured a location for a new school house on the C. E. Babb ranch, just across the road from the Barber home.
The old school building stood so close to the road that the electric transmission line and telephone wires were almost over the structure and the fire caused the breaking of one wire on the transmission line and both phone wires.
Joe Bean, electrical superintendent for the government, and City Electrician Crehore plunged into the work of making repairs and by about half past two the juice from the dam was again turned on and motors put in operation.

Sheckler School
To Be Incorporated
As Non-Tax Unit
Sheckler Farm Bureau
Responsible; Hold Meet
To Elect New Officers
By Mrs. George Elliott
The old Sheckler schoolhouse, which was formerly government owned, and not, according to a general understanding, under the jurisdiction of the TCID, but was a government grant to the residents of Shackled district to be used for an educational or community center, is to be incorporated this week as a non-taxable and non-assessable corporation under the laws of Nevada. The necessary legal papers are being drawn up by the law firm of Johnson and Primeaux, who have kindly donated their services.
At a special meeting called in 1 June, of all members of the Sheckler Farm Bureau, the following board of directors were elected: Ralph Matlack, chairman, Tom Inglis, Gene Dean, John Mansfelt and Clarence Johnson.
Formation of a corporation has enabled the Sheckler Farm Bureau to take out insurance on the property covering public liability and property damage, fire and theft, with the R. T. Walker and Bob Ogden insurance agencies, eliminating the liability of any individual or committee for damage suits. Several other communities in the county with the same type of property, are greatly interested in the advantages.
