Description

THE NEW PUBLIC
SCHOOL BUILDING
A Fine Structure has Been Completed and Accepted by
the Trustees.
-
TO BE OCCUPIED NEXT MONDAY.
Last Saturday the school trustees, Thos. Dolf, J. M. Smitten and Harvey , Burchell, in company with the contractors, inspected the new public school building and were greatly pleased with the excellent workmanship and the sat- isfactory manner in which the work was completed. The trustees accepted the building and highly complimented the contractors, T. A. Jones & Co.
The total cost of the building will be close around $15,000. This is more than was originally expected, but as is usually the case with an individual, some changes and additions come to light as work progressed, and the trus• tees wisely made provision for it, among which was the addition of one more tier of stone to the foundation.
The building is a two story brick structure, with massive uncut stone for 1 foundation, window sills and lintels. and stands near the northern side of a plat of ground 300 feet square. The interior is plastered, the woodwork being sugar pine in the natural wood finish, and Oregon pine flooring. On either side of the broad entrance are hat and cloak rooms, and each of the two class rooms are 26x28 feet, with excellent sliding doors between them so both can be thrown into one room. The second floor is practically a duplicate of the lower. The entire structure is well ventilated and fairly flooded with light.
The workmanship, which was under the direction of T. A. Jones, deserves more than passing notice, because it is so complete in every detail, neat and pleasing in style.
The painting was done by H. V. Clinton & Co. and is very commendable.
The trustees may justly feel prond of the work, and the people of the district may well be pleased with the re-results in that they have such a fine I educational institution.
This public school building on one side of town and the county high school on the other, constitute two very inviting monuments to people looking for a place to locate.
Considering the money panic and the
fact that more money was required than the public had provided, there were
obstacles in the way, but these were
met and overcome with a spirit of confidence and harmony that is commend-
able. And the same was true in the
erection of the high school building. In the case of the tatter it was necessary
to raise $3,500 additional and for the
public school, about $2,000. To meet these obligations without thwarting the,
interests of education, the following public-spirited citizens endorsed the notes, making themselves personally responsible: W. W. Williams, I. H. Kent, Thos. Dolf, Harvey Burchell, Fred Wightman, R. L. Douglass, Ed. Harriman, J. M. Smitten, A. R. Jeffrey, W. C. Grimes.
