HALL TO NEW ONE
At this particular time when this magnificent Fraternal Hall and community center has just been thrown open to the public, and the dancing auditorium booked ahead every Saturday night for six weeks, it will be of interest to reflect upon the similarity of the promoting of this enterprise and that of the original or first community hall and lodge building in this community.
To go back just a little farther, after the county seat was moved from old La Platte to Stillwater, there was a post office established on the large ranch of the late Hon. Lem Allen, a few miles southwest of Fallon, and was called St. Clair. Along in the early 1890's a petition was sent in for a postoffice to be located on Mike Fallon's ranch to accommodate the New River people. There was quite a flurry over it but the petition was granted And Miss Rebecca Bruner, sister of Jess Bruner, was appointed postmaster, the office being located in a mall building that stood just east of the ranch home of Mike Fallon, the property later being purchased by the late Warren Williams. The postoffice still remained in the same building which stood just east of the present fine dwelling of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Hursh on West Williams avenue.
Jim Richards erected a store building, now occupied by the Eagle, but it then stood about the center of what was later Williams avenue and was moved south to its present location on Maine street. A school house was built just back of where the Williams Estate block now stands. These were ;he only buildings in Fallon. Then a larger schoolhouse was needed and Warren Williams donated the ground now known as the fire house corner and a new building was put up. A. R. Jeffrey bought the old school building and moving it converted it into part of the New River hotel, which in later years was moved to Center street to make way for the Flood block and Rex theatre.
School Kept Growing
The school grew and Warren
Williams offered to give the present West End school site and $2000 in
cash for the fire house corner which
he had formerly donated to the district. This generous offer was accepted and the West End school building was completed in 1907. The
